Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Aug. 4 that he found U.S. sanctions against the leadership of Republika Srpska "inappropriate and undeserved" and that he would treat those under them as if the sanctions did not exist.

After a session of the Council for Cooperation between Serbia and Republika Srpska in Banjaluka, Vucic said Serbia believed any policy of sanctions always produced the wrong outcome. "Even if we are a small people in terms of population size, especially compared to the U.S., we have no choice but to disagree with those who imposed sanctions on our people. That is the only possible decision for us, the right and honorable one," Vucic told a joint news conference with Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik.

He said there was "no doubt" that Serbia would suffer indirect consequences for this stance. "Anyone under U.S. sanctions is welcome here," Vucic said.
