Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani stated on Aug. 30 that the decision to prevent the suspension of visa requirements for the citizens of Kosovo as of Jan. 1, 2024, would “kill the dialogue” between Kosovo and Serbia.

She reacted to a statement by French President Emmanuel Macron, who said on Aug. 28 that his country would reconsider the obligations it has assumed pertaining to economic issues and visa policies for Kosovo and Serbia “if (the two sides) do not behave responsibly.”

“I would say that is a way to forever kill the dialogue. If somebody wants to stop the dialogue, then they should take such measures, punitive measures against the people of Kosovo. These measures are not directed against any of the leaders, or against policies, but against the people of Kosovo,” she stated during a visit to the Monument to the Missing in Pristina. She added that this would be a punishment without precedent and a great injustice to the people of Kosovo, resulting in “the death of the dialogue.”

She also said that, during the next high-level meeting between Kosovo and Serbia, she expected the European Union “to find out that its demands had been met and all conditions fulfilled for lifting the unjust measures against Kosovo.”
