Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Sept. 8 that a final decision on a request by the Serbian opposition that general elections be called would be made after talks on Kosovo were over, and after the next session of the U.N. General Assembly.

Speaking at a news conference at the Serbian Presidency, Vucic said that he had already discussed the request with representatives of the ruling coalition, and that he had not seen a willingness on their part “to accommodate the request made by representatives of the former regime.”

“The technical details as to how to do it remain. I believe it would be good to wait until talks on Kosovo and Metohija and the U.N. General Assembly are completed first. Then we can have a joint meeting with government representatives, so that I can ask them, too, to take into account all of the requests and threats from representatives of the former regime, and then I can decide accordingly,” Vucic said.

The president said that “there is no need for anyone to hang on to their seat at all cost.” “If victory is in store for them, we don’t have a problem with that,” Vucic said, adding that he believed that this was very important for democracy.
