The German Foreign Ministry in the evening on Dec. 18, said that the misuse of public resources, voter intimidation and vote buying, which had been registered by international observers during the latest elections in Serbia, were unacceptable for an EU candidate country.
“Serbia has voted, but the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), a body of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), reports misuse of public resources, voter intimidation and cases of vote buying. This is unacceptable for a country with EU candidate status,” the German ministry wrote on its X platform.
A few hours earlier, representatives of international observation missions said in Belgrade that Serbia’s early parliamentary elections had offered voters a choice between political alternatives, but “the ruling party’s systemic advantage undermined the election process overall.”
Representatives of ODIHR, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and the European Parliament, have said, inter alia, that in these elections, observers had noted the misuse of public resources, intimidation and pressure on voters, and cases of vote buying.
