Vucic: Serbia is an Independent Country, Not Russia’s Proxy or Anyone’s Proxy State

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Jan. 10 that he was disappointed with the words of British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, who referred to Serbia as „Russia’s proxy.“  Russia."

The president aserted that Serbia was an independent country, not Russia’s proxy, or a proxy state for the United States, Britain, Germany, or any other country, adding that Serbia takes pride in its independence.

"A story goes that Serbia will destabilize the region. It rather seems to me that many others are already working on it, assisted wholeheartedly by those same actors lecturing Serbia. When you want to pursue your own policy, it bothers many, but Serbia’s is not a submissive one, and we will continue to pursue an independent policy regarding the Russian Federation, as well as all others," Vucic said during a visit to the Russian House in Belgrade.

David Cameron made his statement before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the British Parliament,  speaking in his new role as the British foreign secretary.

In the same speech in Belgrade, Vucic said that the world and the region were "arming themselves to the teeth," and Serbia should not lag behind in that regard. "Everyone is arming themselves to the teeth. The region, too. It is our duty not to lag behind. All I can tell you is that we are not lagging behind," Vucic said.
