According to a report of the organization for protecting human rights, Amnesty International (AI), published on April 24, violations were recorded in Serbia during 2023 of the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, violence against women, members of the LGBTI community and migrants, and the undermining of the right to social security.
The AI’s report about the state of human rights in the world in 2023 reads that accusations of corruption at all levels still existed in Serbia. According to AI, the glorification of convicted war criminals has created a culture of impunity in Serbia and is preventing the victims from reaching truth, justice and compensation. There is still a backlog of 1,700 cases of potential war crimes to be investigated by the relevant organs.
In the report, AI noted that, in April last year, eight European media associations expressed concern over the open hostility of politicians towards the critical media, which was then additionally inflated by the tabloid press, having made the threats and attacks on independent journalists a normal event.
It was added that investigative journalists, human rights protectors and activists had been targeted by SLAPP lawsuits, the goal of which is to exclude the public from participation.
