The construction of a national football stadium in Belgrade's suburban municipality of Surcin, as part of the Expo 2027 complex, kicked off on May 1. The future stadium will have around 52,000 seats.
The circular stadium will be the first "garden stadium," i.e. will be decorated with greenery, and will have a parking lot with 4,500 spaces. The works are slated for completion by December 2026. The laying of the foundation stone was attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, representatives of the caretaker government, and Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik.
Vucic said that the people would choose the stadium's name through a vote, adding that the stadium would be one of the three most beautiful in Europe. "The national stadium is not just a stadium, it is a question of life of our people, it will have all the necessary services. This is the realization of our dreams, it brings growth, an increase in salaries and pensions," Vucic said while touring the works on the Expo 2027 site.
The Expo 2027 Belgrade specialized exhibition event, titled "Play for Humanity - Sports and Music for All," will take place from May 15 to Aug. 15, 2027. Works on the construction of structures for Expo began in June 2023.
