On the occasion of LGBTI Pride Month, Ombudsman Zoran Pasalic on June 26 said that the LGBTI persons were not yet feeling safe in Serbia despite certain progress made in the protection of their rights.
“They are exposed to violence, including physical violence and harassment. Due to expressed prejudices and existing stereotypes about persons of different sexual orientation and gender identity in our society, they are still largely exposed to discrimination and hate speech,” Pasalic said in a news release.
He stressed that it was necessary to legally regulate the status of same-sex relationships and legal consequences of gender change and gender identity.
The ombudsman called for more education campaigns about the position and rights of the LGBTI persons for to help the society overcome the existing prejudices and stereotypes.
