The interior minister and the ruling Serbian Progressive Party top official, Nebojsa Stefanovic, on July 9 said he would not run for the party leadership, stressing that there was no better leader than Aleksandar Vucic. In a statement to TV Prva, Stefanovic said that his political career was linked with Vucic and that he entirely backed Vucic’s policy.
Asked whether he would agree to take the helm of the party if the membership asked him to, he stressed that nothing could be required from him. As regards claims that he faked his academic degree, he accused the Alliance for Serbia leaders of lying, noting that they would probably also try to question the authenticity of his certificate in elementary education.
