Jamaican Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamina Smith said on Feb. 21 that the country has not recognized Kosovo's independence, thus denying Kosovo President Hashim Thaci's claims.

"To date, Jamaica has not recognized Kosovo as an independent state," Smith tweeted, and retweeted Thaci's tweet from Feb. 20.

Thaci said in his tweet that Ambassador Vlora Citaku had informed him that "Jamaica has recognized Republic of Kosovo as sovereign and independent," calling that "great news."

"I know this is a result of hard work & lobbying of several years, incl @RepEliot Engel (Congressman Eliot Engel). Good work. Thank you dear friends from Kingston!" read Thaci's post.

Kosovo Premier Albin Kurti then tweeted that "Jamaica, an important country of the Caribbean and an important part of the Commonwealth of Nations recognized officially the Republic of Kosovo."

"I want to thank the people and government of Jamaica, as well as the PM, Andrew Holness. Looking forward to cooperate and show Kosovo's gratitude in every future possibility," Kurti tweeted late on Feb. 20.
