Nikola Jovanovic, the vice-president of the People’s Party and whip of the Alliance for Serbia caucus in the Belgrade City Assembly, said on Feb. 26 that a decision by the leaders of the towns of Sabac and Paracin, Nebojsa Zelenovic and Sasa Paunovic, respectively, to participate in the local vote announced for April 26, is wrong, adding that there is no room for petty calculations.

“We can bring freedom and possibility of choice to the citizens only once there are conditions for changing the authorities at the national level. The position of the People’s Party and the Alliance for Serbia is that it is in the interest of the citizens of Sabac and Paracin for the boycott to succeed and that a year after the upcoming vote a new, extraordinary vote be called under better conditions,” Jovanovic told N1 TV.

Jovanovic urged all citizens of Belgrade and Serbia to boycott the “fake” April vote, which only serves to legitimize “the bad and corrupt government and give artificial respiration to a regime that has no solution for any problem.”

Jovanovic also said that according to what he had learned, “Serbia 21 is a project by Beba Popovic,” and that “Aleksandar Vucic’s game” with reducing the election threshold from five to three percent was not motivated by the desire to have more citizens represented in Parliament, but quite the contrary – for the opposition-inclined citizens not to be represented in the legislative body.

“Vucic wants to continue treating the opposition as the enemies of the state, he polarizes and divides the society, and then founds satellite parties to play the role of the opposition. He needs people who will impersonate ministers, the prime minister, and the opposition, while he himself impersonates a statesman,” Jovanovic said.
