Marija Vasic, a professor and activist, went on a dry hunger strike last week after a court had decided to extend her detention by another 30 days. By going on a hunger strike threatening her health, Vasic managed to draw public attention to herself and five other arrested activists, unjustly accused of an attempt at overthrowing the constitutional order. In response to days of strong pressure by students and opponents to President Aleksandar Vucic’s regime, as well as appeals by the European Union’s institutions, the Court of Appeals decided on May 20 to replace her detention with house arrest.
