The last week's appointment of a police colonel, Igor Zmiric, as commander of the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ), has alarmed Serbia’s critical voices, as behind the move there may be a plan by Aleksandar Vucic’s government to tighten control over the elite unit of the Serbian police. The reputation of Zmiric, whose name has been linked to the harassment of students during ongoing protests, fuels a suspicion that SAJ might be used against protesters, which has not been the case so far.
