Eight people died from the coronavirus in Serbia in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of fatalities during the epidemic to 6,938, it was announced on June 9.

According to figures of Serbia's Institute for Public Health, there were 198 new cases of infection out of 9,390 samples. There are 510 patients currently being treated in hospitals, 20 of them on ventilators.

The state secretary of the Ministry of Health, Mirsad Djerlek, stated on June 9 that the state was planning "a serious strategy and medical support for those with consequences after recovering from covid," and that such cases were expected to "start seeking help in medical centers in increasing numbers."

He added that the "post-covid syndrome" would be one of the main tasks of the medical system in the forthcoming period, and that "as soon as we are rid of the coronavirus, we must be ready for a serious struggle for treating and rescuing what covid had caused to the mental health."
