Over the past 24 hours 19 people died in Serbia of the coronavirus while 5,224 were newly infected, the covid19.rs website reported on Jan. 4.
Currently 2,188 people are hospitalized of whom 79 are on ventilators. A total of 21,876 people were tested in the past 24 hours. According to official sources 12,806 people have died so far of the virus. Since the outbreak of the epidemic 7,297,175 people have been tested of whom 1,310,845 were positive.
Epidemiologist Zoran Radovanovic has said that the increase in the number of newly infected was expected due to the fact that the authorities had failed to do what they were supposed to ahead of the holiday. Radovanovic told BETA that there were estimates according to which the number of infected was expected to increase by several times owing to mass gatherings for the holiday.
"The authorities failed to act when it was necessary and now they can only cry," he said, adding that estimates that it was better for the authorities' ratings to allow outdoor holiday celebrations was a major factor in the current situation.
