Historian Radina Vucetic has said that the atmosphere of intimidation and violence that the authorities mounted against the opposition in the election campaign were unprecedented and stressed that violence was the refashioning of the electoral will of and beating of citizens.

"In this kind of spiral of violence, I am afraid that violence will only be increased," Vucetic, a professor at the Belgrade School of Philosophy, said in an interview with NIN on Dec. 28.

She said that "the role of propaganda is key to the survival of authoritarian regimes, and is hence key to Vucic."

"The media today is one of the key allies of this government which makes it unsurprising that Vucic first purged the media and made it his own in every way. In a democratic dialogue he and his neo-Radicals would not have won a single battle, regardless of whether the subject was culture, science, politics, the past or the future," Vucetic said.
