The U.S. ambassador in Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, stated on March 20 that the U.S. was committed to the security of Kosovo and that the people of Kosovo could sleep peacefully because NATO has a strong presence and is ready to do what is necessary.

“The U.S. has firmly stood for peace for the people in Kosovo. I can say that we are committed to the security of Kosovo, we are not losing sleep at night worrying about that threat because we believe NATO is prepared and responsible,” Hovenier said in the reply to a reporter’s question about security threats to Kosovo.

He added that NATO had a strong mission in Kosovo, which is unique in the region and which includes several hundred U.S. troops, who are there to secure and provide a safe environment, and that the people should not worry about any attacks.

Hovenier said that the U.S. was aware of Kosovo’s wish to join NATO some day and supported it.

He added that the U.S. wished to change the way of implementation of the central bank of Kosovo’s decree on cash transactions, which banned the Serbian dinar. He said the U.S. respected the central bank as an institution in charge of these policies in the entire territory of Kosovo, but that it was “concerned about it possibly affecting the vulnerable population, especially the Serb community.”
