Opposition Official Urges Opposition to Agree on Elections

Aleksandar "Cuta" Jovanovic, a member of the Serbian parliament from the Ecological Uprising movement, said on April 21 that the opposition had no right to split up and called on the members of the Serbia Against Violence election coalition to meet one more time to reach a final agreement on either running in or boycotting the upcoming election.

Speaking for Nova S TV, he said he had been telling his coalition partners over and over again that there needed to be unity in the decision. "I'd follow the majority had the majority voted for a boycott. Let's keep going. The key word is 'fight.' We owe that to the people who voted for us," Jovanovic said.

The parties in the Serbia Against Violence coalition met on April 19 to bring a decision on whether to run in the elections on June 2.

The proposal to run was put to vote and received support from five parties -- the People's Movement of Serbia, the Green-Left Front, the Ecological Uprising, the Free Citizens' Movement and the New Face of Serbia, while the Freedom and Justice Party, the Democratic Party, Serbia Center and Together were against. The Democrats caused confusion by voting for a boycott, while announcing that they would back the decision of the majority.
