The Fortress Movement civic association of Smederevo has announced that the HBIS Smederevo steelworks has been fined for violating the Law on air protection for the first time in its history.

The court handed down a million-dinar fine against the steelworks for air pollution, while five liable individuals within the steelworks were fined RSD60,000 each, reads the post on the association's website.

The post points out that "though the issued fines are minuscule against the billions in income made by the HBIS steelworks, this is a good foundation for Smederevo citizens to keep fighting, as the state has acknowledged the existence of industrial air pollution in Smederevo for the first time."

At the same time, HBIS Serbia issued a press release stating that company representatives noted during the court proceedings "certain excessive emissions were recorded" in 2021 and said this was "the result of outdated filter technology inherited by the company, whose modernization requires time."

The press release went on to say that the company took all necessary measures immediately following the incident to avoid similar situations happening in future.
