Freedom House 2024 Report: Progovernment Actors Continue To Control Online Sources of Information in Serbia

In terms of internet freedom, Serbia is a free county, but progovernment actors continued to control online sources of information, shows Freedom in the World 2024 report, compiled by American non-profit organization Freedom House, Voice of America (VoA) has reported

In freedom on the net, Serbia scored 70, declining one point from the year before.

The report states that journalists often face physical assaults and threats in connection with both online and offline reporting.

Freedom House points that the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS) documented 183 attacks directed at journalists in 2023 and 36 additional attacks between January and April 2024 on journalists, both online and offline.  

The 2023 figure represents an increase from 2022 when there were 137 attacks in total, it is said in the report.
