New Year’s Eve was celebrated across Serbia with concerts and fireworks, while students in Belgrade, Nis and Novi Sad organized protests in tribute to the 15 people who died in a roof collapse at the Novi Sad railway station and greeted the new year in total silence.
Concerts were held in Republic Square and on the Sava promenade in the Belgrade Waterfront quarter, where a fireworks display was organized. Citizens gathered in squares in Nis, Kragujevac and Cacak where concerts were also organized. According to media reports and social media, attendance was much lower than usual and expected.
Tens of thousands of students and citizens gathered in Student Square and surrounding streets in downtown Belgrade after a New Year’s protest march, where they greeted the new year in total silence lighting up the night with their mobile phones and banners raised.
Novi Sad university students in Freedom Square said that, for them, the new year would start only when their demands were met.
