Activists of the initiative University in Rebellion and citizens gathered outside the Education Ministry on April 22, to protest the appointment of Dejan Vuk Stankovic, a professor at the Belgrade University Faculty of Education, as education minister.
The protesters are carrying placards reading “Trust?,” “Do you dare look at yourselves in the mirror?,” “New minister’s ethical values,” “The Minister of Revenge: Dejan Vucic Stankovic.”
Over the past few years, Stankovic, often invited by pro-regime media outlets to give his views as a political analyst, has been commending President Aleksandar Vucic’s policy. He has also condemned student protests and blockades of faculties throughout the country.
The people gathered outside the Education Ministry have also been collecting signatures for a petition to support the education sector employees who have faced disciplinary action.
The Nemanjina Street in downtown Belgrade, housing the Education Ministry, has been blocked for traffic. The initiative University in Rebellion has said the protest will last until 11.52 am, when they will hold 16-minutes of silence to pay tribute to 16 victims of the tragedy in Novi Sad, when a concrete canopy collapsed at the city Railway Station.
