REM - Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (Beta/Milos Miskov)
Former member of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media's Council Judita Popovic said on April 24 that protesting students' demand with regard to the regulator was justified but that there would be no change in the election of the Authority's Council "as this is a political question."
Popovic told NIN that REM "is a lever" for the regime, adding that incumbent authorities "cannot function" without the regulator and that pressure on decision-makers was therefore necessary.
"Protests are indeed necessary, it is necessary to ask for the appointment of new members to the REM's Council, because it is unallowable for an institution like it to not be functional, even though the functioning of the previous REM Council is questionable," Popovic said.
Students who are unhappy with the operation of the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS) who have been blocking its headquarters since 10 p.m. April 14 have announced that the blockade will last until a new contest for picking members of the REM Council is held or until RTS is dismantled.
