Serbian Government (BETAPHOTO/NENAD PETROVIC/)
The university students who have been boycotting class and blockading their schools since late last year have announced a four-hour protest in front of Serbia’s government headquarters, in downtown Belgrade. Set to start at 3 p.m. and titled ‘Let’s Defend Our Universities,’ the rally will be staged in collaboration with two other initiatives: The United Educators of Serbia and the Rebelled University.
The protesters are demanding a snap parliamentary election, the annulment of the Cabinet decision which enabled financially sanctioning the professors who supported the student strike, the dissolution of the working group drafting a new higher education law, and a stop to the commercialization of education.
“In the interest of Serbia’s future, we must together defend public higher education and university autonomy. Halting the destruction of Serbia’s education system is possible only by calling a snap parliamentary election,” reads a social network statement jointly penned by the three rally organizers.
