Professor at the School of Philology Milo Lompar said on June 6 that in response to the regime’s violence against students, the Rector’s Collegium needed to seek help from the European academic community.

"The international political community has failed to express any solidarity with the citizens and students. The European Union (EU) is willing to tolerate all sorts of violations of European values in Serbia just to satisfy Rio Tinto’s interests through lithium," Lompar said in a comment for BETA.

The professor cautioned that the United States were not paying any attention to events in Serbia, while Russia was ready to react only when its own interests were at stake. "Russian security services reacted to Serbian ammunition exports to Ukraine, but cooperated with the regime before that and denied the use of a sound cannon against peaceful citizens," Lompar warned.

The Rector's Collegium should make it clear to the European academic community that students in Serbia are being subjected to violence at the hands of the regime whereby it is also violating academic freedoms Loncar added. "That would be a minimal yet very important way of helping the students who were arrested. Also, professors of the University of Belgrade must at all times stand by the students who are demanding the release of their detained colleagues," Lompar said.
