In a police and prosecutor's office operation, five staff members of the Novi Sad Faculty of Medicine were brought into custody on June 11 after the arrest of dean Snezana Brkic, media reported.

The Academic Plenum initiative also confirmed that the arrests took place. Among those arrested were non-teaching staff and the heads of various services, including finances, it was confirmed for BETA.

Earlier, the Danas daily reported, the Higher Prosecutor's Office launched criminal proceedings against Brkic and several other members of a strike board on suspicion of abuse of office and disruption of the institution, alleging that she and associates had taken part in organizing a strike that led to the blockade of classes.

The Special Anti-Corruption Department is handling the case and the investigation is still open. The Novi Sad Faculty of Medicine is the only such institution in Serbia that has been striking for months in support of student protests and in response to severe violations of university autonomy.

Its Teaching and Science Council is the only one that has not voted in favor of re-starting classes. According to media reports, Brkic was later released from custody.
