China is today the foremost foreign investor in Serbia with over EUR7 billion in direct foreign investment as well as Serbia’s second largest foreign trade partner and importer and the number three export destination for Serbian products in the world, Serbian Chamber of Commerce president Marko Cadez has said.

At an Economic-Trade Conference and business meetings between Serbian and Chinese Jiangsu province businesspeople, he said that Serbia and Jiangsu were building a bridge of innovation and technical cooperation, the Chamber reported on its website on June 26.  At the conference, which gathered nearly 400 participants, Cadez stressed that Serbia’s goal “is to establish a bridge of innovation, a digital bridge with Jiangsu, by connecting domestic technological parks, innovation hubs and top-level institutes with institutions and companies from this province.”

He recalled that a free trade treaty with China had opened a new chapter in cooperation and enabled the realization of joint projects and added that bilateral cooperation between these two companies had built momentum, underlining the importance of the Jiangsu province, one of China’s most developed, with 85 million consumers and a strong innovation potential.

“Jiangsu is not just set apart by its high GDP and large market with 85 million consumers, but by the special place that it occupies on the global innovation and technology map,” Cadez said, adding that Serbia wanted to attract more Chinese high-tech companies and that Jiangsu already recognized Serbia as a potential European hub.
