Kathleen Van Brempt (feps-europe.eu)
European Parliament member Kathleen Van Brempt told Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic that "a true leader does not silence his people, he gives them free and democratic elections."
In a post in Serbian on the X social media platform, the Belgian MEP went on to say that this was what the Serbian people were demanding. She tagged the Serbian president in her post, adding that it was high time for him to listen to the people and ended the post with the word "Pumpaj" (Pump it), the slogan of the student-led citizen protests across the country.
In another post on X, Van Brempt expressed her full support to the people of Serbia, noting that they were "protesting for freedom, democracy, transparency and accountability for the Vucic regime." "Time for Europe to show support for their fight. Stop the appeasement, now!" she added.
Van Brempt drew the attention of the Serbian public in May, when she addressed European Union Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos after the first report and resolution on Serbia since Tonino Picula became rapporteur for the country were presented before the EP.
