Serbia has another year and a half until regular parliamentary elections so the regime’s opponents have enough time to prepare well, Vladimir Djukanovic, an official of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party and close associate of President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, has said in response to the ongoing protests calling for snap elections.

In an op-ed for the July 7 edition of the Politika daily, Djukanovic maintained that should the protesting university students and members of the general public “continue their behavior” – namely, blocking traffic throughout the country – by the time the regular elections come to pass, “the regime will have secured two-thirds of the seats in parliament.”

According to the politician, even today, “the ruler would easily win the elections in yet another in a series of glorious triumphs, while those who had insanely strong support just months ago despite lacking any kind of plan or program would [now] have a single-digit percentage [of votes], with every likelihood of eventually ending up below the threshold.”

“Only crazy luck and god’s grace have spared us from losing our country this time round, the way we did on Oct. 5, 2000,” Djukanovic concluded, referencing the day Slobodan Milosevic’s regime was toppled.
