Party of Freedom and Justice MP Tatjana Pasic said on July 16 that the fact that the upcoming start of the school year would see roughly 9,000 fewer pupils enroll revealed the demographic collapse in Serbia under the rule of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
"Over the last ten years the number of pupils has dropped by 50,000. The number of births in 2023 was the lowest since World War II. These numbers are not just statistics, they are an alarm and indication of the demographic collapse of Serbia under Vucic's rule," the MP said.
Pasic went on to say that, while Vucic took to the media daily to boast records and successes, the country was literally dying out. "While he builds, villages are vanishing, schools are closing, hospitals are losing doctors and young and educated people are leaving the country every day. That is why we have had young people protesting for eight months and the people rising to seek justice and not resign themselves to Serbia not having a future," Pasic said in a press release issued by the party.
Only when the regime changes, she said in the press release, can the building of a more just, safe and dignified society begin.
