Serbia is once again the sole EU member candidate country in the Western Balkans not aligning with EU’s two new foreign policy decisions on restrictive measures against Iran.

According to the EU’s announcement on Aug. 7, one decision from July 25 pertains to restrictive measures due to Iran’s military support to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and to the armed groups and subjects in the Middle East and the Red Sea region, extending them until July 27, 2026.

The second decision (CFSP) 2025/1558 of July 25 amended the list of persons under restrictive measures over the situation in Iran. All other EU candidates in the Western Balkans have aligned with the two new decisions of the EU Council – North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina – and will conduct their national policies accordingly, while the EU acknowledges this commitment and welcomes it,” the statement reads.
