University Students Block Public Service Facilities(BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)
The informal Academic Plenum group called on citizens on Aug. 19 to sign a petition for scheduling a snap election, stressing that every signature was a step toward meeting student demands and exiting the political crisis.
The group said that the petition was already active in over twenty cities and called on citizens to sign the petition in their cities or launch its signing inside their local communities.
The organizers stressed that early parliamentary elections were what students had been endorsing since it became clear that the regime was not going to meet their demands and that elections were the only democratic solution for exiting the deep political crisis.
They believe that elections “are the only road to opening room for the prosecution of all who break the law and are using violence against students and citizens in the streets,” as well the only way to renew rule of law and trust in institutions.
The petition was launched by the Academic Plenum, MASA, and the PROAKTIV organization of the University in Pristina seated in Kosovska Mitrovica, the Free Universities in Nis, Kragujevac and Novi Pazar, with the support of communities across Serbia and the informal Engineers’ Demands group of engineers.
