The Initiative for Serbian Farmers’ Survival has decided to start protests by placing tractors in front of the relevant institutions, because the state is offering no assistance to alleviate the consequences of a “catastrophic” drought, nor has it fulfilled the earlier requests, the president of the association, Goran Filipovic, stated on Sept. 11.

He told BETA that a meeting would soon be held with other associations, to harmonize demands and set the date for the start of protests.

“We are forced to protest because the Ministry of Agriculture is not responding to our requests for help. The drought has destroyed between 50 and 100 percent of corn and soy, and we are requesting assistance in the amount of 300 euros per hectare, for farming and orchard products registered in the e-agrar system,” Filipovic stated.

He said that farmers would also repeat the demands that were agreed on earlier, but remain unfulfilled, such as exemption from excise duty for fuel at gas stations and loans with one percent interest for refinancing old loans, and the solving of the problem of massive arrears in contributions to the Pension and Disability Fund.
