Oil and gas company NIS (BETAPHOTO/EMIL VAS)
As a solution to the issues caused by the U.S. sanctions against Serbian multinational oil and gas company Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), levied over the company’s majority Russian ownership, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic proposed that Serbia buy out Russia’s shares, then return them when the global situation settles, the Oct. 15 edition of the Vecernje Novosti daily reported.
Moscow, however, was not too keen on the idea, the daily claimed citing unofficial sources and added that Russia seems more inclined to sell its stake to a third party, possibly even the. U.S.
According to the Novosti, the offer was made during Vucic’s recent sit-down with Gazprom Neft management board chairman Aleksandr Dyukov and Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin.
