On Oct. 28, Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut said that citizens should demonstrate unity and readiness to overcome divisions on Nov. 1, the first anniversary of the tragedy at the Novi Sad Railway Station, when a concrete canopy collapsed killing 16 people.

Speaking to Serbian state public broadcaster RTS, Macut said that Nov. 1 was not just a calendar date, adding that it should be commemorated with dignity and in peace.

The state, he said, would try to ensure order in the streets, making sure that all citizens could feel safe. “We must not remain passive to acts of demolition and destructions, or attacks on property and facilities. That would be an indication of a fragile state,” Macut said.

He stressed that the priority of the state leadership was to ensure Serbia’s continuous development.

Asked about the current situation at faculties across Serbia, Macut said he was happy with the developments so far, noting that the new school year had started at most faculties. He praised the University of Kragujevac, describing it as “very proactive”, adding that deans and rectors all over Serbia were aware of the importance of holding lectures and of how it could affect academic integrity.
