Former diplomat Srecko Djukic assessed on Dec. 4 that relations between Serbia and the U.S. were in freefall and that the consequences for Serbia would be huge.

Commenting on the announcement of U.S. President Donald Trump about Serbia’s involvement in the attempted rigging of the U.S. presidential election in 2024, Djukic told BETA that there were many obstacles in diplomatic relations with America.

“Since Vucic’s inglorious visit to Miami when he was kicked out of the Republican Party’s convention, this is the third serious case that indicates a disturbance in relations between Belgrade and Washington, which the authorities in Serbia have not expected. We will see what will take place in the forthcoming days. Obviously, there are major problems in relations between Serbia and the U.S.,” the former ambassador stated.

In his words, Foreign Minister Marko Djuric’s visit also turned into a tourist excursion. “Although Djuric’s visit to America has been announced as an official one, it turned into an ordinary tourist excursion, with him managing to get to a few congressmen, but not being received by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. It can be concluded that the magnitude of deterioration of relations between Serbia and the U.S. is so great that we cannot even imagine what is behind it, despite the fact that the Serbs and Serbia were so happy with Trump winning,” Djukic stated.

He added that the cause of poor relations with the U.S. was short-sighted Serbian foreign policy. “Serbia’s foreign policy is not based on any principle – only on improvisation,” he assessed.
