By removing a banner reading “DUNP in Blockade,” which had been covering the plaque with the logo and name of the State University in Novi Pazar on, DUNP students officially ended their yearlong blockade on Jan. 26.

The decision to end it was made at a plenary meeting on the evening of Jan. 25, following negotiations with a newly appointed rector, Tanja Soldatovic. The agreements were made on, among other things, the restoration of student status for those expelled, new contests for the university professors who had lost their positions at DUNP over the past several months.

One of the students, Enes Dzogovic, thanked citizens who had supported them over the past 12 months, promising it wasn’t the end of their struggle, but “only the beginning.”

A former professor at DUNP, Senad Ganic, said the students who had kept the institution under blockade were “the most beautiful thing that has happened to Novi Pazar.”

“I think what they have done is magnificent. It’s a guarantee that this community has a new generation of young people who have made clear they know how to lead it. Please let the end of this blockade not be the end of your fight for our community, but our beginning,” Ganic said.
