Zdravko Ponos (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)
Should the European Union levy personal sanctions against members of Serbia’s regime, they will be rushing to inform on each other so as to protect themselves, Zdravko Ponos, the leader of the oppositional Serbia Center party and former Serbian Army chief of General Staff, said on Feb. 5.
Speaking for the Radar weekly, Ponos opined that it is quite appropriate that members of the regime, who have been “sanctioned with distrust, disrespect, avoidance, repulsion and obstruction by the citizens of their own country, receive a similar treatment from the world.”
Ponos went on to say that the authorities will attempt to paint such personal sanctions as sanctions against Serbia itself, all as part of the regime’s pre-election campaign whose narrative will be “fearmongering and promoting President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic as a savoir.”
