Following a Feb. 18 sit-down with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said the meeting was very friendly and meaningful and that India confirmed it would participate in the Belgrade 2027 Expo.

“I have great news for the citizens of Serbia. India was the only superpower, I’d say, which so far hadn’t confirmed participation in the Expo and today Prime Minister Modi clearly and unequivocally stated that India wants to significantly participate in the Expo and that India will be coming to Belgrade’s and Serbia’s Expo. That’s the first big and important piece of news,” Vucic told journalists following the meeting.

Vucic, who is attending an artificial intelligence summit in India, went on to say he and Modi also discussed furthering cooperation, particularly in the areas of AI, digital transformation, the pharmaceutical industry, education and the exchange of experts.

The president of Serbia added that defense collaboration, such as exporting Serbian ammunition, could also be very significant.

“I stressed that Serbia sees India as a reliable and strategically important partner in Asia, and that we want to deepen economic exchange and inspire new investment projects. I believe that, by working together, we can additionally strengthen our countries’ ties and open a new chapter in cooperation in a time of speedy global change,” Vucic wrote on Instagram.

Following the top-level meeting, Vucic opined that “very significant possibilities” are opening for Serbia doing business in India and the arrival of Serbian investments, as well as for “talented Indians” coming to Serbia to work on developing a sovereign AI model.

According to him, Serbia is attempting to find avenues for easing the entry of Indian citizens into Serbia since the visa-free regime was abolished at the demand of the European Union.

Vucic also said he invited PM Modi to visit Serbia, where their dialogue could continue and where mutually-beneficial projects could be fleshed out.

For his part, Modi posted a photo of himself and Vucic on X, after earlier sharing an op-ed Vucic published in The Indian Express. “A fine article by President Aleksandar Vucic of the Republic of Serbia, in which he talks about AI, of course, but at the same time highlights his fondness for India, India’s strides in AI and strong India-Serbia relations!” Modi commented.
