The Democratic Party of Kosovo (DPK) is ready to nominate a candidate for Kosovo president who needs to be above political parties, party whip Arian Ahiri said on Feb. 26.

He said that the candidate for president needed to be "an intellectual of repute and integrity in the country and abroad, who will honorably represent the state of Kosovo and its citizens." "We keep with these stances in the sense that we talk on the level of principles and standards about who should meet these attributes to be president of the country," Tahiri told the Ekonomiaonline website.

He added that the party was ready for a snap legislative election in the event that a consensus could not be reached in the Kosovo Assembly on the candidate for president. Asked whether the party supported the re-election of President Vjosa Osmani, Tahiri said that "somebody who has a one-sided approach does the state no good."

"This is not about a political agreement, that issue is over. Political agreements were made when the cabinet was put together. The Democratic Party of Kosovo is not interested in political agreements" he said, but "supporting a candidate that meets the standards that I have named."
