The Serbian government receives between three and four hundred asylum requests annually, of which eight to 10 are approved, Refugee and Migration Commissioner Natasa Stanisavljevic announced on March 19.

Speaking at the opening of the international conference ‘From Reception to Integration: Strengthening Support Systems and Exchanging Experiences’ held in Belgrade, Stanisavljevic stated that a total of 261 persons have been granted asylum in Serbia since 2008.

The commissioner added that a significant number of applicants request asylum but then leave the country before their case is processed.

“In the past years, Serbia has significantly improved its approach to integration, which includes aiding access to education, the job market and social services, so that individuals with granted protection can become full-fledged members of society. This process is essential for individuals but also for the long-term stability, the respect of human rights and social cohesion of [our] society as a whole,” Stanisavljevic concluded.
