On March 25, the Independent Teachers’ Union of Serbia condemned the apprehension and detention of Hamza Ziljkic and Nikola Marjanovic – two students of the State University in Novi Pazar arrested on March 22 on suspicion of attempting to topple the constitutional order – and demanded their immediate release.

“The pressure on employees and students, via disciplinary proceedings launched and conducted by politically-imposed school management, has seriously undermined the conditions necessary for the normal operation of educational institutions,” the Union warned in its press release.

The Union then called on all public school employees to “provide resolute and organized resistance against the repression and destruction of education systematically carried out by the Serbian Progressive Party regime.”

“The situation in the educational system is worse than during last school year, primarily due to the conduct of many acting principals and the increasingly prevalent practice of imposing temporary management in the place of school councils,” the Union concluded.
