The purpose of the joint initiative launched by Serbia’s pro-European parties is to converse with representatives of EU states and make it clear that the situation in the country is worsening by the day, Serbia Center leader Zdravko Ponos told the April 16 edition of the Danas daily.

The opposition politician insisted that it is imperative to explain to foreign officials that President Aleksandar Vucic will not lead the country toward EU membership.

“It is also necessary to explain the futility of expecting the Serbian Progressive Party to bounce back or Vucic to change and lead Serbia through European integration. Even more importantly, the fear of a political vacuum and uncertainty in the wake of Vucic’s fall must be dispelled. Most of those we’ve talked to, such as high-level officials of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and MPs of the Bundestag’s Committee on European Affairs, understand very well that the prognosis with Vucic leading Serbia is about the same as the prognosis for a terminal illness,” Ponos concluded.
