Local Elections in Kosovo (BetaPhoto/Sasa Djordjevic)
Since the Assembly of Kosovo did not manage to elect a new president of state by the April 28 constitutional deadline, Kosovo will have to stage new snap elections within the next 45 days.
The April 28 parliament sitting was attended only by the representatives of the Self-Determination Movement and minority communities, while the MPs of the Democratic Party, the Democratic League, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo and the Serb List boycotted it.
The Assembly initiated a vote for president even though the basic prerequisite – a two-third quorum – was not fulfilled.
NGOs and constitutional law experts have lambasted the move, labelling it a violation of the law and a “serious and unacceptable violation of the Kosovo Constitution.”
As of April 29, Kosovo’s acting president Albulena Haxhiu should begin consultations on the possible date of new early parliamentary elections.
