At a May 8 meeting in New York with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Christian Schmidt, the high representative to Bosnia and Herzegovina, warned of challenges to the Dayton Accords, stressing the importance of reforms, the stability of institutions and Bosnia's bid to join the European Union.

Ahead of his May 12 address to the U.N. Security Council, which will consider the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Schmidt and Guterres discussed current efforts and opportunities to strengthen the stability and functionality of Bosnian institutions and to move key reform processes forward, the Office of the High Representative said in a post on the X social media platform.

The post noted that Schmidt briefed the U.N. secretary general on the recent challenges to the Dayton Peace Accords and their potential implications for the region and for Europe. The statement underscored that Schmidt spoke of the ongoing efforts to preserve stability, including strengthening the functionality of state institutions, supporting the constitutional framework, building the integrity of the election process and advancing reforms important to Bosnia's path to EU integration.
