General Ratko Mladic: Life in Prison for Crimes and Genocide
A decision on provisional or conditional release of Ratko Mladic, the former commander of the Republika Srpska (RS) Army who was sentenced for life for the crimes committed in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) during the war, could be made after May 13, Mladic’s son, Darko Mladic, has told Belgrade daily Politika.
An independent assessment of Mladic’s health by two doctors, requested by Judge Graciela Gatti Santana, was delivered to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals on May 8, the daily reported.
“Considering that two doctors, a Dutchman and a Belgian, as the Mechanism’s independent experts, submitted their assessment, the judge requested from the prison hospital doctors to provide their objections to the findings, if any, by May 12,” Darko Mladic said.
He added that Mladic’s defense team can also submit objections to the independent report by Thursday, May 14, meaning that the Mechanism could potentially decide on provisional release of Mladic on the grounds of his grave health condition, by the end of this week.
Darko Mladic also stressed that his father’s health condition war serious, which is why the Serbian authorities have requested his return home for medical treatment.
