In an op-ed for the May 18 edition of the Politika daily, ruling Progressive Party of Serbia presidency member Vladimir Djukanovic addressed the arrest of Belgrade Police Chief Veselin Milic – suspected of involvement in a gang member’s disappearance and likely murder – adding that “it is time to move from words to actions and conduct a comprehensive cleansing of police ranks.”

“Not so few Progressive officials are connected or involved [with criminal circles] similarly to how the recently-removed Belgrade police chief was,” Djukanovic wrote.

“Everyone will think we’ve become Mexico, specifically Sinaloa, because there nearly the entire police force works for the cartel.” Thus, “if radical steps are not taken, we will suffer the fate of Mexican territories where neither the military nor police dare enter, while the real power is held by drug-dealing gangs with direct control over the police, local politicians, MPs and ministers,” Djukanovic concluded.
