Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said in Beijing on May 24 that his visit to China is of great importance to Serbia and that he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Qiang on May 26.

He said German Chancellor Fridriech Merz's proposal for the faster European Union integration of the Western Balkans and Moldova with associate membership for Ukraine is not especially good for Serbia.

"It is important that the German chancellor came out with something different, something more realistic. I'm not happy with the content for Serbia. It is a much better proposal for Ukraine than for Serbia," he said, adding that it "is better to have the cards on the table and speak openly, than be told fairy tales."

Commenting on an opinion by the U.S. media company Bloomberg that he is close to the "red line" in Serbia-China relations, Vucic said the media outlet "apparently had nothing better to do."

Responding to a comment by Europarliamentarian Andreas Schieder that he stopped all train lines in Serbia on May 23 out of fear of his own people, ahead of a major protest rally at Belgrade's Slavija square, Vucic said that "we, unlike Mr. Schieder, have no problem with demonstrations."
