The government is investing much effort to show that it still has political strength and control over the processes in society but is avoiding elections aware that it will be risky to call them at this moment, Aleksandar Ivanovic, vice-president of the People’s Movement of Serbia said on June 1.

“Instead of elections, we have announcements of rallies across Serbia. This means that the government sees the calling of elections at this time as political risk and would use the rallies to create the impression of unquestionable support. The answer is simple: when you are certain of having popular support, you call elections. When you are not, you organize rallies,” Ivanovic told the Danas daily.

According to him, the announced rallies are a response to the massive student protest held in Belgrade’s Slavija square on May 23, but are meant primarily for the Serbian Progressive Party’s backers.

The Progressive party has announced that a number of rallies will be organized from June 26 to June 28 in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis.
