Zdravko Ponos (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)
Serbia Center party leader Zdravko Ponos said on July 9 that some people would be purged after the elections, some would go to jail and some parties disbanded adding that for the EU Serbia is a job while for its citizens it is their life.
"However it ends - and we know how it will end - Serbia will proceed toward membership in the EU. This will happen without the incumbent authorities, there will be another government, a coalition one. It is entirely clear who is going where - some will be purged, some jailed, some parties will be disbanded," Ponos said in an interview with the Radar weekly.
He stressed that "as far as the EU administration's position goes, it is not unexpected" and added: "For them the question of Serbia is a job, for us Serbia is our life." "That is an important difference. But we should not forget the fact that the member states are the European Commission's stakeholders, not the other way around. Therefore, they are the ones in whose name and for whose benefit the EC works for. There are limits to how far they can push a certain position, not just because of the European Parliament, which does not have huge powers, but because of the member states. This is why the situation is that if Holland says 'no opening of clusters' then that's how it will be," Ponos said.
